Do the best for the majority-Central Coast Forum

A recent article pointed out that the committee is considering (by taxpayers) the development of electric vehicle (EV) charging stations.

There are many reasons why this is wrong.

Does the city council operate gas stations? No.

So why should they get involved in the charging station business?

If an electric vehicle owner chooses to own one, there are multiple options for charging the vehicle.

But first is a short tutorial on EV charging.

These cars have on-board inverters that can change alternating current (AC) to direct current (DC) that the battery can use.

The inverter allows the car to be plugged into a simple charging socket in an outdoor home during slow charging at night (for safety reasons).

Another option, usually used in apartments, is a shared multi-car charging network; or slow.

Commercial "public" charging stations similar to gasoline pumps use large inverters to bypass the vehicle system to provide high-amp DC power to the vehicle, thereby reducing charging time.

The cost of each of these power plant inverters plus installation is $50,000, which may not be a good use of taxes.

As for charging stations, up to seven different vehicle plug configurations need to be addressed; well, we won't go there.

The government’s job is to use public funds to do the best for most people and to stay away from commercial risks.

If entrepreneurs see an opportunity to "make money," that is their business, but it is certainly not the committee's business.
