Allegro MicroSystems, a global supplier of power and sensing solutions for motion control and energy-saving systems, is expanding its QuietMotion product line by launching the new A89307 automotive-grade gate driver integrated circuit (IC). A89307 is specifically designed for battery cooling fans and HVAC systems in electric (EV) and hybrid vehicles. It uses a field-oriented control (FOC) algorithm to drive a continuous sinusoidal current to the load to provide ultra-low noise and vibration, helping automakers Reduce noise and extend battery life, each charge can provide more mileage and reduce the vehicle's carbon footprint.

By design, electric vehicles and hybrid vehicles are quieter than traditional vehicles equipped with internal combustion engines—especially when they are stopped—and drivers are increasingly sensitive to noise generated by components such as cooling fans. A89307 hardware-based algorithms make it easier for designers to reduce fan noise, while improving cooling performance and increasing the mileage per charge. This is good for drivers and good for the environment. — Steve Lutz, Director of Allegro Motor Drive Product Line

A89307 contains hardware-based algorithms without external sensors or software development; users only need to use a simple GUI interface to select parameters and load them into the on-chip E2EPROM of the IC. A89307 uses only five external components, which helps designers reduce material costs by reducing BOM components and promoting a very small footprint in the PCB system of the motor. Its fully integrated algorithm can even eliminate the need for a separate microprocessor.

Operation modes include open-loop PWM or fully programmable closed-loop speed control. In closed-loop mode, customers can program the relationship between PWM and speed to match the PWM command provided by the external ECU. Including field weakening to improve high-speed performance. Low speed operation and windmill start are just some of the functions included in the hardware-based digital algorithm of A89307.

Although A89307 is specifically designed for xEV battery cooling fans, it can also be used for HVAC blowers and liquid pumps in traction inverter cooling systems. The external gate drive makes the device flexible enough to drive various motor powers up to 500W.
